Sickly Central girls ill against Elm Mound

The illness bug wiped out the St. Croix Central girls hoops team last week.

Practice was called off last Monday because more than half the team was out of school sick. The Panthers weren't able to shake the bug by Thursday, losing to Elk Mound 53-39.

The good news is the Panthers have eight days between games to get healthy. They don't play again until this Friday, when they play at home against Glenwood City.

Central coach Shannon Berg said blaming the loss to Elk Mound on illness would be taking the easy way out.

"We had five or six kids who weren't at 100 percent, but that's no excuse," Berg said. "We allowed them to take us out of everything we've been doing well up to this point this season."

Most alarming was the Panthers' shooting. The team has become a pretty accurate shooting group, but against Elk Mound the Panthers made 8-38 shots from two-point range.

Berg said that the lineup alterations that needed to be made for this game took away from the team's on-court chemistry.

"We looked like five games of one-on-one instead of pulling together and running our system," she said.

Sophomore Ella Olson led the Panthers with 16 points. Senior Katrina Brummer had nine rebounds to pace the team.

The Panthers played Elk Mound evenly through the first quarter. In the second quarter the Mounders pulled ahead and they put the game away by outscoring Central 18-7 in the third quarter.
