Spartans rally, knock off Osceola in OT

Adam Henzler's driving layup in the final seconds of overtime gave Somerset a 51-49 win at Osceola last Friday.

With the win the Spartans climb to 2-0 in the Middle Border Conference while Osceola falls to 0-2. Somerset is 4-0 overall this season.

In the hotly contested MBC any win is important. But winning on the road, especially against one of the perennial contenders of the conference, makes this a big win early in the season for the Spartans.

Junior Mike Schachtner had another huge offensive game for the Spartans. Schachtner rang up 32 points. He also scored five of Somerset's seven points in the overtime.

The Spartans needed to make a comeback just to get to the overtime. The Spartans trailed by as much as eight in the fourth quarter.

Somerset took the lead in the first quarter, leading 15-12 at the break. Osceola then switched to a zone defense and it gave Somerset big problems, just as it had done last season. Osceola held the Spartans to eight points in the third quarter. It wasn't until the midpoint of the fourth quarter that the Spartans began getting their offense rolling again.

"We struggled to get into an offensive rhythm, we weren't patient," said Somerset coach Eric Olson. Olson said players besides Schachtner also need to become more of a scoring factor.

Both teams had shots to win the game in the final seconds of regulation, but neither Schachtner nor Osceola's Dave Hogen could get their shots to fall.

The overtime was tied when Somerset got the ball with 45 seconds left. After running down most of that time, the Spartans went to an isolation play, where Henzler drove to the basket. Osceola's players didn't move to help on the play, so Henzler took the ball all the way to the basket for the winning layup.

Henzler also led the Spartans with nine assists. Schachtner led the team with eight rebounds and John Anderson contributed six rebounds.

Olson said senior Mike Wishard played a key role in the game. Wishard played post defense for much of the game and had two key assists in the fourth quarter.

First conference win

The Spartans started the MBC season last Tuesday, overcoming a strong start by Ellsworth to win 56-42.

Ellsworth is an athletic team, and that paved the way for the Panthers to build a 17-13 lead after a quarter. Somerset came back to take a 28-25 lead at halftime, but it wasn't until the third quarter that the Spartans began to put some distance between themselves and the Panthers.

"In the second half they started to turn the ball over more," Somerset coach Eric Olson said.

Somerset led 40-31 going into the fourth quarter. The final nail in the coffin for Ellsworth was a technical foul with 5:56 left in the game. Schachtner went 4-4 on free throws from the foul and Anderson made 2-2 free throws on the ensuing possession, making the technical a six-point swing in Somerset's favor, building Somerset's lead to 15 points.

Schachtner led the Spartans by scoring 29 points.

"That's the best game he's played so far in his high school career," Olson said. "It was nice to see him go up against a tall athletic player in (Jared) Hines and see him still able to score."

Andy Jackson led the Spartans with 10 rounds. Adam Henzler's eight assists were tops on the team.

Two rather spectacular individual efforts came out during the game, supplied by Anderson and Schachtner.

Anderson stopped what appeared to be an easy fastbreak basket for Ellsworth. As an Ellsworth player drove to the basket from the left to complete the break, Anderson swooped in from the right, meeting the ball as it rose toward the basket, spiking it out of bounds.

The other was a dunk by Schachtner in the fourth quarter. The dunk was nice in itself, but it became much more impressive because an Ellsworth defender had stepped on Schachtner's foot as he began his leap for the basket. It happened with enough force that it took the shoe right off Schachtner's foot.

This week's schedule includes two road games. The Spartans will play at Baldwin-Woodville on Thursday. On Saturday the Spartans head to Boyceville for a non-conference game.
