Spartans handle SV before banished at Ellsworth

Somerset's wrestlers were able to take down one of the traditional powers in the area last week, but the Spartans took their lumps from another of the area's top teams.

In their season opener last Tuesday, the Spartan wrestlers rolled over Spring Valley 45-15. But in the Middle Border Conference opening round last Thursday, the Spartans were handed a 59-16 loss by Ellsworth.

The Spartans had several big wins against Spring Valley, but none was bigger than the win produced by Andy Nash at 152 pounds. Nash was facing R.J. Deutsch, who reached the WIAA state tournament last year. Nash led 6-3 after a period, but Deutsch was up 8-7 after the second period. The match was tied at 10-10 when the wrestlers went out of bounds with six seconds left in regulation. Nash was in the down position at the restart. He quickly got to his feet and spun out of Deutsch's grasp for the escape and the winning point.

Freshman Mitch Grahovac gave a smart effort in his first varsity match. He led 4-0 after the opening period, then got the pin at 2:48 in the 135-pound match.

Dylan Schachtner was also wrestling his first varsity match at 171 pounds. Schachtner put together a five-point move in the final 15 seconds of the first period. He made those points stand up, winning 7-3.

The Spartans looked good in the upper weights. After Schachtner's win, Justin Neumann got a forfeit at 189 pounds. Ambrose Martell and Matt Nelson followed that by winning the 215 and 275 pound matches on pins.

This was the first varsity win for coach Randy Skarda, who is serving as head coach for this season.

The Spartans had few answers for the relentless Ellsworth wrestling program. Tyler LeRoy looks ready to build on his strong freshman season, winning his first 112-pound match on a pin.

Drew Baillargeon made an impressive 2003-04 debut, beating Austin Langer 12-0. Langer placed in the Middle Border Conference tournament last year.

Neumann got Somerset's third win, getting a pin in the 189-pound bout.

The Spartans face another of the teams projected to be at the top of the MBC standings this Thursday. That's when the Spartans host Osceola, who beat Amery 54-21 in their MBC opener.
