Fall sports begin on Monday

Ready for your summer to be over?

If you are in high school sports this fall, the end of summer is rapidly approaching.

Local football, girls golf and girls tennis teams can begin their fall practices next Monday. Volleyball and cross country can open their practices the following week.

Here is a rundown of the initial practice plans for each of the local sports. Students needing more information can contact the coach in their sports.

New Richmond

Cross Country: (Coach Brent Aukema) The Tiger cross country team will be starting practice on Monday, Aug. 18 at the high school.

Football: (Coach Jeff Albarado) The Tigers will start practice on Monday, with players expected to be at the high school by 7:45 a.m. Practice each day of the first week will be from 8 a.m.-12:30 p.m. The team will hold a sleepover Friday night, then hold the team picnic and photo day on Saturday morning, starting at 10 a.m.

Girls Golf: (Coach Neal Ziller) The Tigers will hold their first practice on Monday at 7:30 a.m. at The Links golf course. Because the Tigers already have a meet on Thursday, Aug. 14, coach Ziller said there may be two-a-day practices held to get the team up to speed quickly.

Girls Tennis: (Coach Teresa Kvam) Practice for the New Richmond girls tennis team begins on Monday. The team will hold a meeting on Monday from 2-5 p.m. at the high school. The first practice will be from 9-11:30 a.m. on Tuesday.

Volleyball: (Coach Katy Call) New Richmond's volleyball team will be starting practice on Monday, Aug. 18. From Monday through Thursday the Tigers will practice from 9-11:30 a.m. and 1-3 p.m. Their practice on Friday will be from 9 a.m.-noon.


Cross Country: (Coach Diane Belter) Practice for the Spartan boys and girls cross country teams will start on Monday, Aug. 18. Practices will begin at 8 a.m. Fees and physicals cards must be turned in the first day of practice.

Football: (Coach Bruce Larson) The Spartan football team will be handing out equipment on Monday, then going to two-a-day practices for the rest of the week.

Girls Golf: (Coach Bill Powers) Somerset's girls golf team will begin practice on Monday at 7:30 a.m. at Bristol Ridge Golf Club. The practice is open for any girls grades 7-12 interested in golfing.

Volleyball: (Coach Sara Eichten) The Somerset volleyball team will begin its season on Monday, Aug. 18. There will be two practices held that day, from 8-10:30 a.m. and from noon-2 p.m.

St. Croix Central

Cross Country: (Coach Missy Brown) The Panthers will start running on Monday, Aug. 18. For the first four days of practice, the Panthers will be meeting at 10 a.m. at the high school.

Football: (Coach Tony DiSalvo) The Panthers will meet on Monday to distribute equipment from 3-5 p.m. An athletic code meeting will be held at 7 p.m. for athletes and parents, and DiSalvo will be meeting with the football parents at that time. The Panthers will be practicing from 3-6:15 p.m. on Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday of the first week, with a 6-9 p.m. practice on Thursday.

Girls Golf: (Coach Bob Nelson) Any girls interested in golfing for Central can show up at the first practice. That practice will be held on Monday at 8 a.m. at the Hammond Golf Club.

Volleyball: (Coach Amanda Webb) The Central volleyball team will open practice under their new coach on Monday, Aug. 18. For the first week, the team will be holding practices from 8-10 a.m. and 4-6:30 p.m.
