Tiger girls beaten at state by Superior
The first appearance by a New Richmond team in the WIAA State Girls Hockey Championships ended in the semifinals last Friday.
The Tiger girls were beaten in the state semifinals by Superior 4-2. New Richmond and Superior had split the two games that they played in the regular season.
New Richmond coach Steve Gehr said the Tigers got caught up in the excitement of playing in the state tournament.
"They just forgot about the game plan," Gehr said. "It wasn't a lack of effort. We just overpursued, we ended up facing too many odd-man rushes."
Superior got the only goal of the first period. Hally Sharrow, who along with New Richmond goalie Molly Gehr was one of the three finalists for Miss Hockey of Wisconsin, scored 2:41 into the game.
The Tigers came back to tie the game at the 11:36 mark of the second period. Hannah Dove, the only freshman on the New Richmond roster, netted the goal on assists from seniors Kim Musta and Ashlyne Anderson.
Superior scored two more goals in the second period, leaving the Tigers facing a 3-2 deficit entering the third period.
The Tigers cut the margin to 3-2 when Dove struck again, at the 6:21 mark of the third period. Her power play goal was assisted by Anderson and Steph Kendrick.
With 3:30 left in regulation, Superior tallied a power play goal that put a two-goal obstacle in front of the Tigers.
New Richmond goalie Molly Gehr stopped 24 of the 28 shots she faced in the game. Superior goalie Jamie Prendergast stopped 19 of New Richmond's 21 shots on goal.
This year is another step in the improvement of the Tiger girls program. The team's 12-8-1 record is the first winning record for the Tigers in four years. The Tigers also increased the number of goals they scored while decreasing the number of goals they allowed. This was the first time in four seasons the Tigers outshot and outscored their opponents.
"The girls had a great season," coach Gehr said.
Superior then lost to Fond du Lac on Saturday 2-1 in the girls state championship game.
New Richmond and Superior were the teams that knocked out Hudson from this year's WIAA girls state tournament. Hudson was the two-time defending state championship team, winning the state title in both years since the WIAA began holding a girls state tournament.
While this is New Richmond's first appearance at a WIAA girls state tournament, the Tigers did reach state several times when WAHA held the girls state tournament.
