Homecoming bash for Panthers, ripping Mondovi 45-0

What a Homecoming bash.

You can use your own adjectives (crushed, destroyed and demolished quickly come to mind) to describe how the St. Croix Central football team beat Mondovi in the Panthers' 45-0 Homecoming Game win on Friday.

The score only begins to show how dominant the Panthers were in this game. St. Croix Central rolled up 380 yards in this game, compared to 39 total yards for the Buffaloes. That's nearly a 10-1 advantage in yards in the game.

The Central defense was outstanding. Outside of a 32-yard pass completion, Mondovi had seven yards of total offense, all of which came on 27 running plays. Mondovi could only manage one first down in the entire game (the above pass play) against the fiery Panther defense.

While the Panther defense was stuffing Mondovi, the Panther offense ran on, over and through the Mondovi defense. Jordan Kooiman led the Panthers by rushing for 180 yards. Among those yards were touchdown carries of 45, 57 and 28 yards.

Brady Hughes also scored twice for the Panthers. His first came when the Mondovi punter fumbled the ball in the end zone that put the Panthers ahead 32-0 at halftime. His second came on a 21-yard run in the third quarter.

The Panthers finish the regular season this Thursday, with a home game against Spring Valley. The Cards are using their first chance to play against former coach Duane Jourdeans as motivation. Jourdeans is now an assistant coach at Central.

The WIAA playoffs begin next Tuesday for the Panthers. It now looks as if the Panthers will be playing in Division 5 of the state tournament bracket. The playoff brackets are scheduled to be announced sometime on Friday. There are a number of teams who could be possible first round opponents for the Panthers. Among the possibilities could be Somerset, Grantsburg and Osseo-Fairchild.
