Spartans run at Ellsworth Invite

Somerset's boys nearly came away with the win in the Ellsworth Invitational Cross Country Meet last Tuesday. The Spartans finished second in the meet, nine points behind Eau Claire Regis in the seven-team meet.

Somerset's boys accomplished this with two of their top runners out of the lineup. With Matt Hanzlik and Todd Lippman out due to health issues, the rest of the Spartans stepped up.

Josh Hecht led for much of the boys race before finishing sixth. Steve Pesavent and Tyler LeRoy were also top 10 finishers for the Spartan boys.

Pesavent has moved up in recent meets, after starting the season not among the team's top seven runners.

"He's seeing that he has the talent to do what he wants," said Somerset coach Diane Belter.

Belter said now is the time for the Spartan runners to start gearing up for the big races at the end of the season.

"Right now is where we need to start exercising our mental toughness to be ready for sectionals," she said. She said this is the time when the runners need to challenge themselves to make big improvements, so they will be comfortable running at a faster pace when they reach sectionals.

The Spartan girls took fourth among the seven teams in the meet. The highlight for the girls was the second place finish by freshman Cambrya Belter. Belter battled Ellsworth's Amanda Samuel for the lead throughout the race, with Samuel pulling away in the final stages to win by eight seconds. This is quite an improvement, because Samuel had beaten Belter by 30 seconds in a recent meet.

"Cambrya had her best race by far, she handled herself like a veteran athlete," said coach Belter.

Coach Belter said that Jessie Pray also ran well in this race, making a considerable improvement in her time.

The Spartans are now gearing up for the Middle Border Conference Meet. This year's meet will be held next Thursday, Oct. 14, in Ellsworth.
