Panthers rally in seventh to beat Mondovi

A team badly in need of a few breaks produced their own breaks on Monday.

The St. Croix Central baseball team pulled out of a Dunn-St. Croix Conference losing streak by scoring three runs in the bottom of the seventh inning. That was enough to push the Panthers past Mondovi, 8-7.

This was a back-and-forth game, especially in the late innings. The game was tied 2-2 heading into the sixth inning. Mondovi scored two runs in the sixth, but the Panthers came back with three runs to take a 5-4 lead into the seventh.

In the seventh Mondovi tacked on three runs to lead 7-5. Central then got its three in the bottom of the seventh for the win.

The Panthers loaded the bases in the bottom of the seventh. With two outs, Adam Brown walked to force home one run. Central coach Mike Fern then brought in Rance Retherford as a pinch-hitter.

Retherford lined a shot to the left-center field alley, chasing home Garrett Ullom and Jason Belisle with the winning runs.

The bottom of the batting order came through in a big way for the Panthers. Adam Reyzer batted ninth, driving home two runs in the sixth inning. The bottom three in the order also produced the two second inning runs.

Tyler Cody pitched the distance for the Panthers. Though he tired late in the game, he was able to finish the win.

Fern said he hopes this game turns things around for the Panthers, who now stand at 3-4 in the D-SC.

"There's a lot of teams we can beat, we just need to play a little better fundamentally," he said. "We didn't get many breaks in the first half of the season, maybe now they'll start going our way."

Good pitching wasn't enough for the Panthers last week. In games last Thursday and Friday the Panthers pitched well enough to win. But defensive miscues and a lack of timely hitting led to a pair of Panther losses.

The Panthers gave up eight unearned runs in a 10-7 loss to Boyceville last Thursday. Then all four Durand were unearned in a 4-3 loss at Durand last Friday.

Central coach Mike Fern said the team is struggling to find confidence right now. The team was held to two hits in Friday's game but still had chances to go ahead in the seventh inning.

Ryan Fedie led off the seventh with a walk, eventually scoring on a groundout by Brenton Hartung. Scott Ramberg then walked to reload the bases. Tyler Cody then hit a smash up the middle that looked like a hit that would score at least one run. Instead, the Durand pitcher somehow got a glove on the ball and threw home to get a forceout, preventing the tying run from scoring.

Tyler Cody pitched Friday, throwing a five-hitter. The bad timing for the Panthers was that two of those hits followed errors, in the second and fifth innings, and each of those hits drove home two runs.

"Our pitching has been good enough to win games, but we can't give extra outs," Fern said.

The Panthers had a promising start against Boyceville Thursday, leading 5-1 after two innings. Cody tripled to score Ramberg to start the first inning, before scoring on Garret Ullom's sac fly.

The Panthers added three more runs in the second inning, two scoring on a single by Cody.

Boyceville came back to take charge of the game with a six-run fourth inning.

The next action for the Panthers is this Thursday, when they play at Amery. The Panthers are scheduled to play at Prescott next Monday, before playing at home against Colfax next Tuesday.
