Spartans run up against tough foes

The Somerset track teams opened the outdoor meet season against some of the toughest competition they will see during the regular season.

Starting the season at Osceola last Thursday, the Spartans were facing Osceola, River Falls and Hudson. The Spartans finished at the bottom of the team standings in both meets, but the coaches felt the teams benefitted from seeing the tough competition this early.

"What's not shown is the improvement of many of our athletes," said boys coach Richard Thompson. "I really like what I'm seeing."

The Spartans set a school record, shaving nearly two seconds off the old record in the 800 meter relay. The 3200 meter relay team cut 200 seconds off its previous best time of the season.

Neither of the Spartan teams was able to win any events in the meet. The girls team had several second place finishes, including the 3200 meter relay team, Brianna Johnson in the 100 hurdles and Amanda Plourde in the 400 meters.

One of the best races of the girls meet was the 3200 meters, where there were four state-caliber girls running. Somerset's Whitney Langer took third, but ran a personal best time in doing so.

Somerset's depth was taxed a bit in this meet because four of the girls were on the school music trip to the east coast.

The Spartans will be back in action this Friday, competing in the Amery Invitational.
