Central boys squeeze Plum City 68-34

The squeeze was applied by St. Croix Central's defense last Tuesday, as the Panther boys put away Plum City 68-34.

Central's double-header that was scheduled for last Friday against Boyceville was postponed due to the heavy snows that night. A makeup date is still being worked on, but the games will not be held as a girls-boys double-header because of the difficulty of rescheduling games.

The Panthers had little trouble putting away Plum City last Tuesday. The Blue Devils have struggled the past few seasons. The win keeps Central in second place in the Dunn-St. Croix Conference, with a 7-2 conference and an 8-2 overall record.

Central coach Mike Fern said the best part of the win over Plum City was getting extensive playing time for the Panther bench players. Two players who missed the first month of the season, were among those who took advantage most. Seniors Jake Butler and Cory Muller are both getting into playing shape, including Butler scoring 11 points in the second half on Tuesday.

"It gives our kids on the bench a chance to be more confident when they get in a game in the future," Fern said. "It gives me more confidence in them too, it's a two-way street."

Butler and Derek Raebel each scored 11 points to lead Central's balanced attack. Cameron Sarnstrom and Steve Gulich each scored nine points and Tyler Cody and Dustin Meyer each logged eight points. Raebel led the team with 11 rebounds, with Cody grabbing nine and Gulich seven. Raebel led the team with four assists, as did Butler with his three steals.

The Panthers face a critical game in their hopes of a Dunn-St. Croix Conference championship this Thursday, when they play at Mondovi. The Panthers will also be in action next Tuesday, in a home game against Elk Mound, a team that upset the Panthers in the opening round of conference play.
