SCC boys take fourth in 2005 D-SC meet

The progress made all season by the St. Croix Central boys cross country team showed when the Panthers placed fourth in the 2005 Dunn-St. Croix Conference Meet, run last Tuesday in Mondovi.

In both the boys and girls meets, it was a three-way battle for the team championship between Colfax, Glenwood City and Boyceville. Colfax took the boys championship with 28 points, followed by Glenwood City at 48 and Boyceville at 54. Central's boys were fourth at 105 points.

Glenwood City grabbed the girls title, with 42 points. Boyceville was just behind with 46 and Colfax was right there too, with 51 points. Central only had three healthy runners for the girls race, so they did not count in the team scores.

The Panthers did get three all-conference runners in the meet. Freshman Steve Zerwas earned first team all-DSC credentials by placing seventh in the boys race. Natalie Hansen and Kailey Haas are both second team all-conference runners after placing 12th and 14th respectively.

Zerwas had to work his way up through the pack to earn his place on the all-conference first team.

"He really came on in the last two miles and moved up about six spots to finish first team," said Central coach Missy Brown. "Next year, with more racing experience, he'll be really tough."

The Panther boys will have an excellent 1-2 tandem next season with Zerwas and Josh Manore. Manore is still coming back from an injury, but he managed to place 20th in the boys race.

"I'm just hoping next season (Manore) stays injury free because he really is going to be a tough competitor," Brown said.

Derrek Pederson, Erik Halverson and Mike Langer rounded out the top five runners for the Panthers at the conference meet.

Brown said that Hansen and Haas targeted the all-conference spots and ran between 11th and 14th through the entire race.

"The hard work and determination really came through," Brown said.

Kately Forsythe was Central's third girl, finishing 27th.

The Panthers now turn their sights to the WIAA Division 3 Sectional Meet. This year's sectional meet will be held at Boyceville this Saturday. The girls sectional race will be run at 11 a.m., followed by the boys race at 11:45 a.m.
