Seniors step it up, Central moves to 3-0

There will be games when younger players struggle. That's when seniors need to step forward.

That's just what happened for the St. Croix Central boys basketball team last Thursday at Pepin. Seniors Ryan Fedie, Dustin Meyer and Tom Redmon combined for 39 of Central's 47 points as the Panthers logged a 47-37 win.

Fedie was hot early in the game, hitting a pair of three pointers as the Panthers were able to build a 10-point lead in the first half. Fedie finished with a game-high 19 points, followed by Meyer with 12 and Redmon with eight. Meyer led the team with seven rebounds and four assists.

"Some of our younger players didn't play quite as was a nice night for Ryan to come through," said Central coach Mike Fern. "The seniors took control of the game and did a nice job down the stretch."

Getting the long road trip to Pepin done early in the season and coming away with a win is a relief for the Panthers.

"It's a tough place to play, there's no room on the ends (of the court)," Fern said.

The element that has to be a constant for the Panthers is defense. In this game, Meyer had the job of facing Pepin's leading scorer, Josh Murray, and Meyer held him to 12 points.

"We're going to be a team that has to grub for everything we get. We need to play defense as well as we can," Fern said.

The Panthers will be back on the road this Friday, this time making the trip to Plum City.
