SCC boys quickly go to 2-0

The St. Croix Central boys basketball team is 2-0 after beating Elmwood 48-36 on Friday.

The game was close for a quarter, with Central leading 10-9 entering the second quarter. The Panthers flamed up in the second quarter, outscoring Elmwood 17-2 in the quarter. Point guard Jeff Fern hit a pair of three-pointers in the quarter to lead the charge.

Central coach Mike Fern said the second quarter was when the Panthers got on track offensively for the first time this season.

"We had a nice improvement from the first game, especially offensively," he said.

One of the best areas for the Panthers in this game was taking care of the ball. The Panthers only had 10 rebounds in the game.

Coach Fern said the only area he wasn't happy with in Friday's game was rebounding. The Panthers had a height advantage in this game, but often let themselves get pushed too far under the basket when battling for rebounds.

Tom Redmon and Jeff Fern shared the team's scoring lead with 10 points each. Coach Fern said Dustin Meyer played a strong all-around game. He scored seven points and led the Panthers with seven rebounds and four steals.

There aren't any huge individual statistics because the Panthers are using 10 players on a regular basis. In the first two games, Coach Fern has replaced five players at a time at several stages in each game.

"We have a lot of kids who are pretty even. Our younger kids did a nice job, that's one bright spot," Coach Fern said.

The Panthers get one of the toughest road trips of the conference season out of the way this Thursday, when they wind their way south down to Pepin.

Positive start

There isn't a team in the Dunn-St. Croix Conference that looks forward to playing at Elk Mound. So when the Panthers scored a 42-31 win in their season opener, which was played at Elk Mound last Tuesday, it was a nice win to cross off the schedule for the Panthers.

"Any time you win at Elk Mound you have to feel good," said Coach Fern.

The Panthers return two players who saw major playing time last season, seniors Ryan Fedie and Dustin Meyer. Tom Redmon also saw a fair amount of time with the varsity. With 10 players seeing court time against Elk Mound, it meant this was the first substantial game time for most of the team.

Coach Fern said Glenwood City is "the odds-on favorite," in the conference this season after returning all its players. He said Colfax is another team that will be tough.

"I think we can be up there near the top," Fern said. "We've got some good young kids. We'll be okay once we get going."

Coach Fern said the players in his post rotation should develop into a strong group. With Meyer, Redmon, Mike Hauge, Tyler Welch and Trevor Hall, the Panthers are five-deep in post players who can contribute at the varsity level.

Hauge received praise from Coach Fern for the defense he played against Chad Creaser, Elk Mound's leading scorer, in last Tuesday's game. Hauge also led Central with seven rebounds in the game. Fedie and Redmon each grabbed six rebounds.

Fedie led the Panthers with 11 points, with the points well balanced after him.
