Tiger tennis suffers first setback in MBC action

Any hopes of winning a Middle Border Conference boys tennis championship in 2006 will depend upon how teams fare against Baldwin-Woodville and Eau Claire Regis.

New Richmond's boys are now 0-1 against those conference co-favorites.

The Tigers lost on their home courts last Thursday to Baldwin-Woodville, 5-2.

This match was closer than the final outcome would indicate. Four of the seven matches went to three sets.

Tiger coach Mike Montello said two of the best efforts from his team might have come in losing efforts. Chad Weaver played one singles for the Tigers, facing defending conference singles champion Tyler Howard. Howard was able to score a 6-2, 6-4 win.

"Chad played admirably," Montello said. "I hope to see continued progress in his play as he concentrates on singles for the rest of the season."

With Kyle Mitchell on an FFA trip, Matt Tschudy moved over to play four singles. For two sets Tschudy and his opponent battle to a draw, before B-W senior Derek Peterson won the second set 6-2.

The Tigers had one win in singles and one win in doubles. Freshman Trevor Anderson won at three singles, recovering from a rough second set to take the third set 6-0.

In doubles, Jake Kleiner and Blake Berger also struggled in the second set. That was sandwiched around a 6-2 win in the first set and a 6-0 win in the third set.

Win over Amery

The Tigers climbed to 2-0 in the MBC last Tuesday with a 6-1 win over Amery.

The doubles matches were swept by the Tigers and they took wins at one, three and four singles.

Kleiner, Anderson and Mitchell were winners on the singles side for the Tigers. The two and three doubles matches were quick wins for the Tigers, but the one doubles team of Berger and Tschudy ran hot and cold. They took the opening set 6-3, then were blanked in the second set 6-0. Just as abruptly, they turned things around and took the third set 6-0.

With the lost to Baldwin-Woodville, New Richmond chances for a conference title hinge on their performance this Thursday, when they play at Eau Claire Regis. The Tigers will again travel to Eau Claire on Saturday, to compete in the Eau Claire Memorial Invitational. Next Tuesday the Tigers will compete in a non-conference match at Pine City, Minn.
