Editorial: Rain-soaked event draws attention to homelessness

The Salvation Army of St. Croix County went ahead with its "Shanty Town" event in River Falls last weekend, despite the rainy and cool conditions.

It just helped to prove a point: Homeless people have to deal with all kinds of elements no matter what, so why should an event designed to raise awareness of homelessness wimp out?

County Salvation Army director Duana Bremer said about 20 people spent the night in the River Falls Middle School gym, and about 50 people attended the program highlighting the challenges of homelessness.

"It was a little disappointing," Bremer said of the numbers. "I thought the program was excellent. The people who were there thought it was good."

Kids, get your remote control vehicles out of the closet and come to downtown New Richmond Thursday night for some racing competition.

The "Do It Downtown" promotion from 5-9 p.m. is all about fast vehicles. Some local racers and dealers in fast vehicles will have their favorite cars, motorcycles and whatever on display for all to see.

To top it all off, local kids and adults can compete for prizes in a remote control vehicle race. Sounds like a fun time for participants and on-lookers alike.

Candidates for the second annual Miss Heritage royal court are being sought.

This year's New Richmond royalty will be selected as part of the Heritage Festival Sept. 22-24.

Tickets are selling like crazy for Jeff Gordon's visit to Cedar Lake Speedway June 28.

The night will include several events in honor of the four-time Nextel Cup champion's visit, as well as a full schedule of oval track racing.

If you don't want to miss out, call 612-363-0479 or visit to order your tickets.

Posters promoting a $150 reward have been appearing around town. Seems Carrie Gervais lost her dog, Jersey, a black lab puppy, recently and hasn't been able to track it down.

The dog ran away from home with the family's other dog, Windsor. One dog returned home, the other didn't.

The dog is less than a year old.

Call Gervais at 715-246-9590 if you have information about the dog's whereabouts.
