Tigers get four in MBC finals
Sophomore Kyle Mitchell won the Middle Border Conference championship at four singles and two other Tiger entries took second place in the 2006 MBC tournament, played last Tuesday in Durand.
Juniors Blake Berger and Jake Kleiner took second place for the Tigers at one doubles. Seniors Tom Skoglund and Brent Nordquist took second place at three doubles. Freshman Trevor Anderson took second place for the Tigers at three singles.
Mitchell was seeded second at four singles and received an opening round bye. That meant he didn't play his opening match until mid-afternoon. He was able to score a 6-0, 6-2 win, moving him into the finals against top-seeded Dan Berger of Eau Claire Regis.
Berger had given Mitchell his only conference loss. Mitchell was the far superior player this time around, beating Berger 6-0, 6-2 in a match that didn't start until nearly 8 p.m. The tournament had been delayed two hours by an early afternoon rain shower.
"Kyle is playing very well, as he has taken his game from 'bump tennis' to a more aggressive level," said New Richmond coach Mike Montello. "He was definitely the best player in the conference at this flight."
The seeding at one doubles was very close, with Berger and Kleiner ending up with the fifth seed. The Tigers quickly proved they were deserving of better. In the opening round they cruised past Amery 6-1, 6-1. In the semifinals they faced the top-seeded duo from Ellsworth. Berger and Kleiner played smart, consistent tennis to knock out the top seed, 7-5, 7-5.
In the finals the Tigers faced Eau Claire Regis, the team Montello feared most in the bracket. After falling behind 3-0 in the first set, the Tigers reeled off six straight games to take the set. That hot streak ended at the end of that set. The Tigers' serving wavered in the final two sets and Regis won them 6-2, 6-1.
Anderson was the top seed at three singles after going through the MBC regular season unbeaten. In the semifinals Anderson locked into a huge battle with Nathan Zacharias of Baldwin-Woodville. Anderson took the first set 6-4, but Zacharias took the second set in a tie-breaker. During the third set the rain arrived, putting the match on hold for two hours with Anderson trailing 4-3. When the match resumed, Anderson was able to get the match to a tie-breaker, where he won 7-5.
In the finals Anderson faced Seth Pamperin of Regis. Anderson had given Pamperin his only loss of the MBC season and the Regis senior was stoked to get revenge. Pamperin got it, winning 6-1, 6-1.
"I feel Bubba (Anderson) has done as well as could be expected thus far," said Montello.
Skoglund and Nordquist had an opening bye after getting the second seed in three doubles. They then rolled past Ellsworth in the semifinals, 6-4, 6-0.
In the finals the Tigers nearly upset the top seed from Baldwin-Woodville. New Richmond jumped to a 5-0 lead and won 6-3. B-W dominated just as much in the second set, winning 6-1. The third set was tight the whole way and the Tigers don't get their first lead until 5-4. The set went to a tie-breaker, where the Tigers get an early lead. But B-W them rallied back to win 9-7 and capture the title.
At two doubles the Tigers got a third place finish from Logan Frye and Matt Tschudy. They rolled past Amery in the opening match, then took the top seed from Regis to three sets in the semifinals. In the third place match the Tigers convincingly beat Durand.
"Matt has shown solid improvement and Logan can do some things well," said Montello. "I think this is a very solid two doubles team."
The Weaver brothers played one and two singles for the Tigers. Chad Weaver had a tough flight in one singles and lost both of his matches. Chase Weaver lost his opening match, but was able to come back in the fifth place match for a 6-1, 6-2 win over Durand.
