Marquette finally gets past first round of NCAA Tournament
Marquette University will play Stanford Saturday evening in the second round of the NCAA South Regional at Anaheim.
The Golden Eagles won their first national tournament game since 2003 Thursday 74-66 over Kentucky.
It was the first time in 21 years the Wildcats were sent home in the first round.
Marquette was up by two with just over :20 seconds left, but 11th-seeded Kentucky met its downfall by putting Wesley Matthews on the free-throw line. He made all of eight of his free shots in the final 31-point-four seconds.
Marquette shot 57-percent from the floor in the second half.
Jerel McNeal scored 20 for the No. 6 Golden Eagles, who improved to 25-9.
Senior Joe Crawford scored 35 points for Kentucky, which closed out at 18-13.
Saturday, the Eagles will be the underdog as they face third-seeded Stanford. The Cardinal improved to 27-7 with an easy win over Cornell, 77-53.
