NR man arrested on several charges
Matthew Steven Kline, New Richmond, was arrested on Saturday, Sept. 20 for allegedly stealing tools from the Farm and Home hardware store.
After discovering that Kline allegedly left his one-year-old child alone in their home during his time at Farm and Home, police filed additional charges of abandonment of a child and neglecting a child against Kline.
A Farm and Home store employee called 911 Saturday after Kline's behavior raised suspicion that he was in the process of stealing tools.
While one employee was on the phone with police, another employee allegedly witnessed Kline take two DeWalt tool boxes from the trunk of his car and throw them in a nearby ditch.
When officers arrived they found Kline in the parking lot of Farm and Home. Upon searching Kline's vehicle, officers observed a new saw in Kline's trunk.
An inventory check of the saw indicated it was missing from Farm and Home.
Kline was arrested for theft and transported to the St. Croix County Jail.
Kline is charged with two counts of theft, valued at less than or equal to $2,500.
Additional allegedly stolen tools were recovered by New Richmond police at Kline's home.
The child abandonment charge is a felony and the neglect charge is a misdemeanor.
New Richmond officers went to Kline's home after being contacted by the St. Croix County Jail where Kline was being held.
Kline allegedly told jail personnel he left his child alone in their apartment. When New Richmond police arrived at the home, Kline's wife and two friends had also just arrived to find the child alone, but safe.
The police report states that the child had apparently been locked in a bedroom for an extended period of time and there were numerous safety hazards in the room, such as uncovered electrical outlets.
Kline is scheduled to appear before Judge Howard Cameron on Oct. 15 in St. Croix County Circuit Court. Kline was released from jail on a signature bond.
