The Dynamics, the Somerset High School Show Choir, has been selected to perform at the Midwest Airlines Center in Milwaukee for the Wisconsin Association of School Boards (WASB) Convention Jan. 21.

The Dynamics will be one of 10 high school music groups from around the state chosen for this honor.

Last spring Rachel Erickson, the Director of the Dynamics, submitted an audition CD of the group to the Wisconsin State Music Association (WSMA).

WSMA then submitted their selections to the Wisconsin School Board Association.

The Dynamics are in their second year of existence, but the vocal group has already made a big splash.

Last year the group received a first place award at the state music solo and ensemble festival.

They have also performed for a number of local and area venues including the Landmark Center in St. Paul, Valleyfair, the Somerset Chamber of Commerce Spring Gala and Pea Soup Days.

The group includes 20 singers and Brie Crichton is the accompanist. Melissa Huber, artistic director of The Space in New Richmond, is serving as the group's choreographer this year.

Becoming a member of The Dynamics isn't easy. Students audition in the spring for the upcoming school year. They must perform an a cappella selection, sight read music and learn a short choreography section and perform it in the audition.

"It's been a pleasant surprise to have so much talent right from the start," Erickson said. "The kids were excited about starting an auditioned group."

The group performs a number of genres of music. Last year they performed some Broadway musical pieces and a cappella numbers. Erickson said the group is exploring vocal jazz and swing this year.

In addition to performing at the WASB Convention, Erickson is trying to arrange the opportunity for The Dynamics to perform at the Wisconsin State Capitol on Jan. 20.
