Mildred Peabody, 89

Mildred Jeanette (Achterhof) Peabody, age 89 of Hammond, passed away on Dec. 13, 2008 at home.

She was born May 8, 1919 in the Township of Baldwin, Wis. to parents John and Dora (Helders) Achterhof. Mildred attended the Hopyard School in grades 1-5 and attended grades 6-8 at the Baldwin Christian School. She graduated from Baldwin High School in 1937.

Married to Earl Peabody on June 12, 1940, they made their home in Hammond. Two children were born to this union: a daughter Caroline, and a son, Robert. Mildred and her family attended and became active members of the Hammond United Methodist Church.

Mildred worked at various cleaning jobs at homes and offices, and was treasurer of the Village of Hammond from 1951-1953. Earl Peabody passed away on Sept. 23, 1972. Mildred was appointed to the first clerk-treasurer position for the Village of Hammond in 1975 and held that position until her retirement in 1987. On April 22, 1978, Mildred was married to George Omann of Hammond. George passed away on June 15, 1986.

Being a very active and dedicated member of the Hammond United Methodist Church, she taught Sunday School, Vacation Bible School, held the offices of president, secretary and treasurer of the Ladies Group, and was treasurer of the church and the charge from 1963 to 2004. Mildred compiled a large church scrapbook and helped with the preparations for the 150th church anniversary in July of 2007. She did a family genealogy and she and her daughter have worked to keep it current. She also compiled two large scrapbooks on the history of the Village of Hammond which were donated to the Hammond Public Library at the end of 2006.

Mildred served on the Hammond Cemetery Association as secretary and treasurer from 1974 to the time of her death, and also wrote a book on the History of the Hammond Cemetery which sold more than 100 copies. She was a homemaker and very family oriented. She enjoyed sewing, crocheting, knitting, puzzles and music. A highlight for Mildred was being chosen as Grand Marshal for the parade celebrating Heartland Days in 2005.

Preceding Mildred in death were her first husband, Earl Peabody; second husband, George Omann; parents, John and Dora; brother, Myron Achterhof; brothers-in-law, Gordon DeYoung, Anthony Stelsel, George VanSomeren and Gary VanSomeren; son-in-law, Allen Harris; daughter-in-law, Nancy Peabody; niece, Pamela Wevers; and step-sons, Darold Peabody and Lamoine Peabody.

Mildred is survived by daughter, Caroline Harris of Rosemount, Minn.; son Robert (Diane) Peabody of Omaha, Neb.; four grandchildren, Paul (Mara) Harris, Ann Harris, John (Michelle) Harris, and Christopher (Rebecca) Peabody; five great-grandchildren, Zachary and Amanda Harris, Tyler and McKenna Harris, and Blake Peabody; two step-daughters-in-law, Myrtle Peabody and Betty Peabody; eight step-grandchildren, Chris, Bill, Joe, Nancy, Larry, Sandy, Cindy and Donnie; sisters, Evelyn Stelsel, Myra VanSomeren, Donna Keil and Marilyn Wevers; sister-in-law Julia Wevers; and many other relatives and friends.

Funeral Services were held at 1 p.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 17, at the United Methodist Church of Hammond. Burial followed at the Hammond Cemetery. Visitation for Mildred was from 5-8 p.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 16, at the O'Connell Family Funeral Home in Baldwin, and also one hour prior to services at the church. Memorials in honor of Mildred are preferred to the Hammond United Methodist Church.
