Old Gem sets off to see the Wizard

Acting and musical theater classes for youth begin at Old Gem Theater in February.

Classes include musical theater, young performers ensemble, imagination station and Broadway melodies.

Students in this year's musical theater class will learn to act, sing and dance. The group will perform "Wizard of Oz" in March. The classic story by L. Frank Baum follows the adventures of Dorothy as she travels through the wondrous land of Oz in search of the Wizard who will help her return home. Songs in the show include "Somewhere Over the Rainbow," "We're Off To See The Wizard" and "If I Only Had a Brain."

The class is for students 8 years old and up and will meet four times a week. Beginners are welcome.

This summer the Old Gem Theater is planning to produce the Disney musical "High School Musical 2." Students interested in performing in it are encouraged to participate in "Wizard of Oz" to enhance their theatrical experience.

Students who have previously participated in Old Gem shows may audition for the Young Performers Ensemble production of "In Search of Anne Frank: Children of the Holocaust."

This powerful play chronicles the journey of a young girl as she discovers the writings of Anne Frank and other children who died during the Holocaust. Performances will be in late February and early March. This show will be performed for schools and will include adult members of the Old Gem Acting Company. It is a wonderful opportunity for young actors to perform side by side with professional performers.

Imagination station, taught by Sue Dorsch, introduces the youngest aspiring stars to the world of theater. It meets two times each week in preparation for the students' presentation of a sketch as pre-show entertainment before "Wizard of Oz."

Broadway melodies, taught by Virginia Haggart, is a less time-intensive class for students who love to sing. Students meet for an hour once a week through May and learn hit Broadway songs and simple choreography.
