Update: Barn total loss, but dairy herd saved in morning barn fire

Fire completely destroyed a barn in Pierce County Wednesday morning, but a spokesman for the Spring Valley Fire Department says firefighters were able to save all of the animals.

The fire was reported at around 4:45 a.m. and 25 firefighters from Spring Valley arrived just after 5 a.m. to the 40-acre farm of Aaron Hinzman, N8546 50th St., in the Town of Spring Lake, southeast of Spring Valley.

When firefighters arrived they found the barn completely engulfed in fire and according to Tracy Pelzel, a Spring Valley Fire Department, the structure was a complete loss. He added that they were able to save all of the animals which were in the structure when the blaze started.

Tony Pelzel, a Spring Valley Fire Department spokesman said firefighters from both Spring Valley and Elmwood battled the blaze. Tanker trucks were called in from the Union Fire Department (Baldwin, Hammond, Woodville).

Firefighters were on the scene until about 9:50 a.m.

No injuries were reported and Pelzel said an investigation is under way to determine out what caused the fire.
