Music scholarship available for Somerset area students

Is the sound of music in your college future?

If so, the sound of money may also be there to finance it.

The Somerset Music Boosters have announced a $200 scholarship fund available for Somerset's graduating class of 2009.

"We hope to increase the number and or amount next year," said Liz Victor, Somerset Music Booster member.

Anyone from the graduating class who is interested in pursuing an education in music or performing arts is eligible. Applicants must be accepted to a college and enrolled in the coming fall semester. Students must fill out an application form.

A committee of Booster members will select the recipient on an anonymous basis. The winner will be announced at Senior Memory Night on June 3.

The decision to start a scholarship fund had been in mind for a while.

"The Music Boosters were discussing future plans, ways to support students, ways to gain visibility and community support and ways to establish ourselves as a group that plans to be active in supporting music and the arts in the future," Victor said.

To help support and grow the fund, the Boosters are holding a community carnival at Spartan Auto on May 16 from 11 a.m.-2 p.m. for the public. They are also sponsoring a karaoke group called SingMinnesota in a tent at Country Splash concert event at Float-Rite this summer.

"The group definitely wants to increase the scholarship fund for next year and any money we raise will go toward doing that," Victor said. "We would like to wait until we see how these turn out, as they are both first time events."

The Somerset Music Boosters currently has 20 members. For a scholarship application, contact Jenna Evenson at the Somerset High School Counseling Office at 247-4848, ext. 221 or e-mail jevenson@somer

Deadline for scholarship application is Monday, April 27, 2009.
