Liquor Depot moves back to downtown Somerset

It has been almost two years since Liquor Depot left its residence of 25 years in downtown Somerset.

Now, according to owner Mary Wallace, the store is back where it belongs.

As of Jan. 17, the Liquor Depot moved its inventory from 830 Rivard St. in the River Hills Commons back to 350 Main St.

Although Wallace said the River Hills Commons building was beautiful and she enjoyed being in a brand-new building, the decision to move was economic.

"The bottom line is that I need the traffic," Wallace said.

She said she had hoped the post office moving out to River Hills in September 2009 would bring more traffic, but it just did not materialize.

The 350 Main St. location had been on the market, and Wallace said she had a few inquiries. One in particular was very interested, but she said that entity was unable to secure funding.

Although the past year was not easy - including a court battle over village liquor licensing practices - Wallace is chalking it up to a learning experience.

"I've realized that this location (in downtown) is good," Wallace said. "We've had people that had been customers for 25 years who did not come by as often when we were in River Hills. Now they come by and said they are glad we're back."
