Appleton woman allegedly uses dead rat in restaurant extortion plan

An Appleton woman is accused of planting a dead-rat in a restaurant meal and threatening to tell the media she found it there, unless the owners gave her $0.5 million.

Debbie Miller, 41, was charged Monday with extortion, obstructing police and disorderly conduct.

An Outagamie County court commissioner ordered a $1,500 cash bond. She's due back in court on Thursday.

Prosecutors said Miller claimed to have the found the rat April 17 in her lunch at the upscale Seasons Restaurant.

The owners kept the rat and gave it to their insurance company to examine it.

They said the animal was a laboratory rat that appeared to be cooked in a microwave. The restaurant does not use microwaves.
