Committee to hold public hearing on banning Indian mascots and names

The state Assembly's Education Committee will hold a public hearing March 17 on the bill that would ban Indian team names and mascots in Wisconsin public schools.

Dozens of names and logos have vanished in recent years, but there are still about 40 of them out there.

Under the measure, a person could complain to the state superintendent and that office would investigate.

If the superintendent finds merit, the affected school board would have a year to drop its Indian moniker or be fined up to $1,000 a day.
