Farming expenditures rose in 2008

It cost more to farm in Wisconsin last year.

The 2008 Farm Production Expenditures report from the National Ag Statistics Service says the average Wisconsin farm spent $120,513 last year compared to $106,410 in 2007.

The average farm in the Dairy State spent $17,692 on feed, $16,410 on farm services and $12,179 on labor.

The biggest increases were a 38 percent increase in machinery other than tractors and self-propelled machinery, 35 percent more for seeds and plants, 31 percent increase in tractors and self-propelled machinery and a 28 percent increase in farm improvements and construction.

Farmers did spend less on interest, real estate and property taxes, trucks and autos.
