Head of Monroe County Board ousted for supporting new criminal justice facility

The head of the Monroe County Board was thrown out of office for supporting a much-needed criminal justice center which taxpayers said they couldn't afford.

Dennis Hubbard lost by 18 votes to Jim Schroeder in a recall election this week. He was the eighth supervisor to be removed for supporting a $27 million criminal justice facility in Sparta, at a time when many county residents have lost their jobs.

The project was scrapped after the new supervisors took over.

But Hubbard says it doesn't solve the space problems in the current jail and court system, which are in a courthouse that's 114 years old.

He says there's no room for a third circuit court to be added next summer.

And Monroe County spends $1 million a year to send jail inmates elsewhere.
