'Movie in the Park' event a success

Approximately 100 people attended the Somerset Chamber of Commerce's first Movie in the Park event on Saturday, Aug. 28. "This was the perfect time of year to do it," said Casey Goessl, chamber president. "However, in hindsight, we might look at having it on a weeknight before school starts."

Somerset hosted its own version of a drive-in movie at the Village Park on Saturday, Aug. 28.

The Somerset Chamber of Commerce presented the Dreamworks production of "Monsters vs. Aliens" on an inflatable screen tethered in left field of the baseball diamond.

For $10 per vehicle, approximately 100 people camped out on the hill starting at 6 p.m. A bouncy castle provided entertainment prior to the show, as well as movie soundtracks over a loudspeaker system.

Concessions were available, though people were allowed to bring their own snacks.

After the movie, attendees were treated to a 10-minute fireworks show.

According to Casey Goessl, chamber president, the fireworks program was the show that they had scheduled to run during Pea Soup Days in June. It had been cancelled due to rain.

"We (Somerset Chamber) were happy with this as the first time," Goessl said.

"This is the kind of event that doesn't require a whole lot of volunteers," he continued. "We'd like to make this an annual event."

He did mention the fireworks portion would only happen this year.
