It was something like out of a fairy tale.

For the past three years, homeowner Lacey Scottum and her husband have been finishing the basement in their 4-bedroom, three-bath Osceola home.

Between the renovation and taking care of two young children and a dog, Scottum admitted that she hadn't done much with the main floor.

"We had so many home projects started; it was on my 'to-do' list," said Scottum.

Enter HGTV designer Taniya Nayak - and $10,000 towards a home makeover.

When the Scottums bought some carpet earlier this year from Carpeting by Mike in Somerset, they entered a giveaway on a whim.

The giveaway was the nationwide Mohawk Custom Weave Home Makeover Sweepstakes. Mike Faust, owner of Carpeting by Mike, said that he had the Scottums fill out the entry at the store and he mailed them in.

"When we found out we won, I kept thinking, 'OK, what's the catch?'" said Scottum. "Even when we were filling out the paperwork, I wondered what the catch was."

"It wasn't until last week that she said she was now starting to get excited," Faust laughed.

On Tuesday, Dec. 7, Nayak, a well-known interior designer that has appeared on HGTV's Bang for Your Buck, Destination Design and Designed to Sell, came to meet the Scottums. She toured the Scottums home and was able to discuss the style that they had in mind for the home.

"Lacey has been amazing to work with," commented Nayak. "She knew exactly what she wanted and wasn't afraid to voice it."

Though she was on a tight schedule while in Wisconsin, Nayak was available for a meet-and-greet at Carpeting by Mike's on Tuesday night. She conducted mini-design consultations with guests that brought photos of their decorating dilemmas.

On Wednesday, Dec. 8, Nayak and Scottum returned to Carpeting by Mike to pick out the flooring and carpet. The segment was videotaped for an upcoming HGTV program, but details have not been finalized yet. Crews plan to come back in the spring to film the actual renovation.

Nayak, Faust and Scottum were filmed discussing the options for flooring, which will be replacing the carpet in the kitchen/dining room.

"We went with a cool tone on the wood grain," said Nayak. "It is a nice modern look and a great color. If you went any darker, with the lifestyle you have (two kids, one dog), you'll see more dust."

The trio then went to the Smartstrand brand of carpet to choose a style for the custom area rug. Kneeling on the floor, they compared the rug sample with the wood flooring and color pieces.

Nayak said that they determined that $7,000 would go toward flooring, and the remaining $3,000 would go towards furnishings, paint and accessories.

After they selected the flooring materials, Faust and his team placed the order while Nayak and Scottum took off toward Minneapolis to purchase the rest of the makeover items.

"We'll stop at Crate and Barrel, Pier 1, IKEA and wherever else strikes us," smiled Nayak.

The actual floor installation won't be done until next year, after the orders come in. The crew is planning on coming back to film the project.

Scottum said that she is especially excited to get the project finished.

"I'm a photographer, and she picked through my photos and is using some of them in the design," said Scottum. "I thought that was pretty cool."
