Transformer catches fire at New Richmond Middle School

New Richmond firefighters responded to reports of a fire at New Richmond Middle School on Thursday afternoon.

A transformer had caught fire causing several pops and small explosions as fire crews fought to contain the blaze.

The transformers, located on the east side of the school next to the former alternative school, were fully engulfed in flames when firefighters arrived. Firefighters had the fire extinguished within minutes.

New Richmond Utilities was also called to the scene to cut the power to the transformers.

Several spectators flocked to the smoke, including school district staff and administration.
