Hammond's Yellowstone Trail Social scheduled for Saturday

What do Bozeman, Mont., Aberdeen, S.D. and Worcester, Mass. have in common with the Village of Hammond? All were towns along the original Yellowstone Trail, the first transcontinental automobile tourist road in the United States.

From 1912 to 1930, the Yellowstone Trail was promoted as a major tourist motor route across the United States. This road was touted to be "A Good Road from Plymouth Rock to Puget Sound," and made its path through Wisconsin along the way. At a time when most roads were still rough, unpaved and muddy trails, the Yellowstone Trail offered tourists a way to explore America in their brand-new automobiles.

The Yellowstone Trail was sponsored and funded through a grassroots effort across the upper region of the United States. It was through the hard work and dedication of the members of the Yellowstone Trail Association, which was formed in 1912 and active until 1930, that the road was constructed and marked all the way from Plymouth Rock, Mass. to Puget Sound in Washington.

Across St. Croix County, as well as other counties in Wisconsin and throughout the United States, a new effort is under way to recognize the importance of the Yellowstone Trail to tourism across the U.S. Hammond falls right along the Yellowstone Trail, which follows highways TT and 12 from Baldwin to Roberts. To celebrate Hammond's place in the history of the Yellowstone Trail the Central St. Croix Area Chamber of Commerce is hosting a Yellowstone Trail social on Saturday, May 19.
