Brewers take Cubs in an exciting finish

Ryan Braun hit a two-run double in the ninth inning Thursday to give the Milwaukee Brewers a 4-3 win over the Cubs in Chicago.

Starter Yovani Gallardo is okay, after his knee went backward and he tumbled to the ground on his back.

It happened on a play at first, as Gallardo leaped to avoid a diving runner and first baseman Prince Fielder. The pitcher stayed on the ground for three minutes, but he went on to throw another one-plus innings.

Gallardo went six frames, giving up three runs and striking out four.

Braun went 3-5 and he hit a solo shot in the sixth, ending a career-high 78 games without a homer.

In the bottom of that inning, Cub fans threw beer and debris at Braun as he chased down a double from Geovany Soto in the left field corner and he made a long relay throw to nab Kosuke Fukodome at the plate.

Braun wouldn't call his game-winning hit revenge, but he did say it was nice to quiet down the fans in a rivalry game the Brewers might not have won last year.

Turnbow's status

Brewers' Manager Ned Yost and General Manager Doug Melvin talked about Derrick Turnbow's status Thursday, but they're not saying what they plan to do.

On Tuesday, Yost said the 2006 All-Star has become too erratic to be trusted in a close game.

On Wednesday night, Turnbow came in when the Brewers were down 13-5 in the eighth and he proceeded to give up four more runs before Yost called Mitch Stetter to get the final out.

That made Turnbow's ERA balloon to 15.63, with a 0-1 record and opponents are now batting .414 against him.

Yost said, as diplomatically as he could, that Turnbow's been pressing and one good outing could turn him around.

Fans, meanwhile, have called for Turnbow's head, but really, it's not that easy.

The 30-year-old Turnbow is out of minor league options, which means he'd have to clear waivers to go down. If that happens, he can refuse the assignment and become a free agent, but he'd have to give up his salary of $3.2 million.

That salary, meanwhile, could make other teams shy away from Turnbow especially the way he's throwing now.
