UPDATE: Names of those involved in fatal freeway crash released

Michael Thomas Doering, a 22-year-old New Richmond man, was killed and two passengers seriously injured after a pickup truck in which they were traveling struck another vehicle on I-94 Saturday night.

The Wisconsin State Patrol received a report at 6:08 p.m. of a 2007 Chevrolet Silverado driving erratically near mile marker 14 heading eastbound on I-94.

At 6:13 p.m. the Silverado pickup collided with a 2007 Chevrolet Suburban from behind, veered into the right ditch and rolled over near mile marker 19 (the Baldwin exit).

Jon W. Hurlburt, a 53-year-old man from Colfax, was driving the Suburban. He and his 44-year-old passenger, John E. Dachel, were not injured. They were both wearing seatbelts.

Doering, the driver of the Silverado, was ejected from the vehicle and killed. Mahriyah Rae Mckenzie, the 23-year-old female passenger from Clear Lake, was airlifted to Regions Hospital in St. Paul with life-threatening injuries. Lucas T. Pitzen, the second passenger in the pickup and a 24-year-old New Richmond man, was transported to Regions by ambulance with life-threatening injuries.

Doering, Pitzen and Mckenzie were not wearing seatbelts. A news release by the Wisconsin State Patrol stated alcohol was a factor in the accident.

The crash remains under investigation.

The State Patrol was assisted by St. Croix County Sheriff’s Department, United Fire & Rescue, Baldwin Ambulance and St. Croix County Medical Examiner.
