New business brings NYC to NR

When Bennie and Stacy Brevard-Mays moved to New Richmond about two years ago, they knew something was missing.

Bennie, a New York native, said he hated that New Richmond had only two options for clothing.

“Everyone shops at Walmart and you have 30 people wearing the same thing,” he said. “I understand they’re there for convenience, but for us, shopping became a whole day affair.”

That’s when the idea for New York Stylez came about.

The store opened July 1 at 141 S. Knowles Ave., offering affordable urban clothing, custom vinyl graphics and exclusive jewelry designs by Julie Buckman, which feature wire-wrapped precious stones.

The space formerly housed Carpeting by Mike and several renovations had to be completed before the retail clothing store was opened.

“We did everything ourselves,” Stacy said. “We wanted to give it a different feel for the area.”

At 8.5 months pregnant, Stacy said she helped Bennie move the fixtures and install the skyline border around the entire store.

While the two have never owned a retail store, they do have a winning combination. Stacy holds a master’s degree in accounting and used to work as an accountant for the state of Minnesota. Bennie has worked at various retail stores, including New York City-based Century 21, a high-end department store on the East Coast. He’s also helped to remodel several Walmart locations, giving him an understanding of store layout.

Future plans for the store include offering various sporting goods like soccer clothing and basketball shoes, which the couple plans to have in stock by Aug. 15.

“(Stacy’s) dad coaches soccer and said there is no place in town to get quality soccer clothes,” Bennie said. “People don’t want to venture into the Twin Cities if they don't have to.”

The couple also plans to design their own Christian-based line of clothing.

“Our faith is very important to us,” Stacy said. “God led us down this path and it’s important that we maintain that spirituality.”

As a way to give back, the Brevard-Mayses also offer 10 percent of all purchases to local churches.

“Customers just need to mention their church and we’ll make sure they get the money,” Stacy said.

Currently the only way to get the clothes is to shop in the store; however, Stacy said she hopes to have online shopping available soon.

The couple also said they’re looking into additional New-York-based wholesalers to supply their store.

“We’re going to a few wholesaler shows to see what else we can offer,” she said.

New York Stylez is open Monday-Thursday from 10 a.m. until 6 p.m., Friday from 10 a.m. until 8 p.m., and Saturday from 10 a.m. until 6 p.m.

“Everybody seems to like it,” Stacy said. “They really like the concept of it.”
