When the announcement came for the winner of the 2015 Burger Battle during the New Richmond Relay for Life on June 12, there was at least one person surprised by the outcome.

“I was,” said Cassie Hatella, Manager of the Star Prairie Sports Bar and Grill, who was named the winner.

Star Prairie’s winning entry was the “Varsity Burger”, an eight-ounce patty, with american or pepperjack cheese. Additional toppings were italian roast beef, caramelized onions and coleslaw, which sits on a top of a pretzel bun.

Hatella said three or four versions were worked on before they found the Varsity Burger.

“We are very humbled by (the award),” she said, which came with a plaque that had the Bar and Grill’s logo on it.

Hatella said this was the Bar and Grill’s first try in the Burger Battle.

“We like to help out whenever we can,” she said. “Anything we can do to give back to the community.”

The battle benefitted the Relay for Life.

Star Prairie was one of eight entries in this year’s Burger Battle along with Ready Randy’s, The Wild Badger, Next Door Café, Rusty’s Waterin’ Hole and Chowhouse, Deer’s Bar, Table 65 and Not Just a Café.

The battle started April 1 and went through May 31. Punch cards had to be purchased and required in order to vote for the best burger. Voting for the best burger ran from May 31 to June 5.

“We were very appreciative of the opportunity to be in the battle,” she said.

Hatella concluded by saying the Varsity Burger is now a permanent part of the Bar and Grill’s menu and they will be back to defend their title next year.
