Fusion expands, adds powder coating service
A metal fabricating company in New Richmond has expanded its facility, and also added a new service for customers.
Fusion Metal Products, founded in 1995 and located at 822 N. Dakota Ave., recently moved into a 4,200-square-foot addition to its 8,200-square-foot building.
The key manufacturing components in the new section of the building are a huge sand blasting booth and an equally large powder coating oven (a 30-foot batch oven to be exact).
According Fusion Metal Products owner Bryan Knudtson, the capability to sand blast and powder coat large metal pieces is something that area industries have a need for.
The closest similar large powder coating oven is in Hugo, Minn., he said.
"It's an extremely durable product," he explained. "We sand blast all our parts prior to that process, to get the powder to adhere to the material."
The company, which employs 10 people, fabricates metal products for businesses in the food, dairy and other industries. Many of those custom orders end up getting powder coated, so Knudtson said it made sense for his company to add the process to its facility.
Even though Fusion Metal Products uses the powder coating process a lot, Knudtson said they hope to work with other local companies to meet their needs as well.
"I recognized there was a need for this in the area. We hope they outsource their powder coating needs to us rather than having it done somewhere else," he said. "I'm not the only one around here who needs this."
Knudtson said the powder coating process is environmentally friendly because there are no fumes generated.
"That's one of the reasons why we added this," he said. "It's green."
