Scientists excel at “Border Battle”

On Saturday, Jan. 25 eleven St. Croix Central High School students ventured to River Falls to compete in the 2014 Science Olympiad Border Battle competition hosted by UW-River Falls. The team medaled in two events and had strong performances in many others. Brandon Berg and Joe Berg earned second place in Geocaching while Nick Hammond and Melissa Schmidt-Landin earned fourth place in Technical Problem Solving.

Some other notable results include:

  • Fifth places: Nick Hammond and Melissa Schmidt-Landin in Astronomy; Nick Hammond and Claire Hueg in Material Science
  • Seventh places: Mitchell Donahue in Anatomy & Physiology; Jordan Bringgold and Nick Hammond in Circuit Lab and Scrambler
  • Eighth place: Dana Queen and Melissa Schmidt-Landin in Dynamic Planet
  • Ninth places: Kerstyn Johnson and Melissa Schmidt-Landin in Designer Genes; Mitchell Donahue and Michael Sauer in Disease Detectives; Robert McVey and Michael Sauer in Geologic Mapping
  • Tenth place: Robert McVey and Jordan Bringgold in MagLev
  • 11th place: Brandon Berg and Joe Berg in Rocks and Minerals
  • 13th places: Joe Berg, Mitchell Donahue and Claire Hueg in Code Busters; Dana Queen, Jordan Bringgold and Michael Sauer in Experimental Design

The next Science Olympiad competition will be hosted at Menomonie High School on Saturday, March 1. Congratulations team and good luck at the regional competition!

Sarah J. Nigbor serves as a regional editor for RiverTown Multimedia, a position she began in April 2017. She joined RiverTown Multimedia in October 2013 as a news reporter for the New Richmond News, before being appointed editor of the Pierce County Herald in Febraury 2015. She graduated from the University of Wisconsin-River Falls with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Spanish and French in 2001. She completed a minor in journalism in 2004.
