WITC instructors teach hands-on activity at high school

High school students received an up close and personal encounter with pigs' feet and cow stomach compartments and learned to suture and splint when two Wisconsin Indianhead Technical College instructors visited their classroom. Jeffrey Johnson, doctor of veterinary medicine and WITC Dairy Herd Management instructor, and Julie Wadzinski, WITC Farm Business and Production Management instructor, recently taught New Richmond High School's agriculture students, employing hands-on instructional techniques.

The two WITC instructors collaborated with NRHS instructor Rachel Sauvola in five classes. In two classes, students learned how to splint. In others, they learned to suture using split pig's feet from the grocery store. Besides splinting and suturing, students learned about the sections of the inner linings of a cow's four different stomach compartments and other vital information about caring for a dairy herd.

"Student response was fantastic," Johnson said. "They were engaged, energized, asked great questions and even wanted to keep their splints on — but they didn't get to do that.

"Julie and I were invited as part of our efforts to extend help to area high school agriculture teachers by bringing activities and speaking on topics that fit our areas of expertise," Johnson added. "This was my second visit to New Richmond and Julie's first."
