Opera full of fun at St. Croix Central Elementary

Opera for the Young performers and more than a dozen SCC students performed in front of the school and a handful of parents on March 3.

The Opera for the Young performance at the St. Croix Central Elementary School on March 3, was an opera full of fun.

The Opera for the Young program presented an adaption of "Pirates of Penzance" to all elementary school students.

The performance included humor, student involvement and exposed students to a style of music they may not have been familiar with.

"Opera for the Young brings live opera to students at an age-appropriate level. The story and the music is something that students can easily understand and the performance is engaging and specifically geared to children," said Jeanne Larson elementary school music teacher.

More than a dozen SCC students participated in the performance.

Students dressed up as pint-sized pirates, police and sailors to entertain their parents, teachers and classmates.

Preparing for the pirate-themed performance took time.

"The process of learning the story and the song involves telling the story, listening to a preparation CD of the opera and learning the songs. Students in grades two, three and four also act out the story with a specially prepared script and practice the songs. Students enjoy putting on their own 'play' of the opera and even dress up in costumes as they tell the story," Larson said.

Larson said teaching the opera to students is a wonderful part of the school year that students enjoy.

While Larson takes on the task of preparing the students for the opera, the Panther Parent's Group funds the performance at the school.

Larson said students and teachers alike, appreciate the group's support of the musical performance.

"We are extremely fortunate to have the continuing support of the Panther Parent's Group who has provided financial support for about 10 years now," said Larson.
