Students compete in spelling bee

New Richmond Middle School students participated in the annual Scripps National Spelling Bee on Feb. 1.

This year, following bees in every Language Arts classroom, 28 students participated.

Media center specialists Patricia Van Nevel and Sheila Sattler served as judges, English teacher Vicki Cobian was pronouncer and Principal Doug Hatch directed the event.

After many rounds, three eighth-graders remained in competition -- Jake Weiss, third place; Chrissy Kletschka, second place; and Jesse Stenske, first place.

After a misspell, Kletschka moved to the final round to battle Stenske for the title.

When Kletschka misspelled "equivalent," Stenske corrected her mistake and took the title after successfully also spelling "planetarium."

Stenske will be representing New Richmond at the CESA Southern Regional Bee in Turtle Lake on Feb. 20.
