Board approves second ball field

The Hammond Town Board approved the construction of a second ball field at a meeting Monday, Sept. 23, with the hopes of completing the project by the spring.

“The ball field will be similar to the existing one at the Town of Hammond park at 1816 County Road E,” Town of Hammond board member Paulette Anderson said. “The St. Croix Central School Park and Recreation is in need of more ball fields and since we have park impact funds available this seemed like an ideal project.”

Excavation is set to begin in the next few weeks with the expectation that the field will be finished this fall. Fencing is also among the things the board believes could be installed before winter.

The idea for a second ball field came about when the park committee was informed that there were funds set aside for used for parks that needed to be spent by the end of 2014. The committee then went to parks and recreation to see what the group was in need of and a new ball field was first on the list.

According to Anderson, the entire project is expected to cost around $20,000, with everything included.

Along with the construction of the new ball field, the Town of Hammond will also upgrade its recycling center by adding concrete under the dumpsters and new black top, Paulette said. Concrete will also be added around the benches and backstop of the existing ball field.
