Got medications? Take them to the sheriff or police department
The St. Croix County Sheriff’s Department, as well as the New Richmond Police Department, will dispose of unwanted medications you may have in your home.
The program is free, it is anonymous, and it accepts all types of medication.
The program is officially called the St. Croix Medication Disposal Program, commonly referred to as the Drug Take-Back program. The program operates under the authority of the Drug Enforcement Administration and in partnership with the police departments of each municipality in St. Croix County.
Citizens may drop off medications at any police station in St. Croix County or at the sheriff’s department in Hudson. Medications accepted can be any type, with few exclusions. Over the counter, prescription, liquid and solid are accepted.
People are asked to remove any identification from containers of liquids, or tubes of cream or ointments, then to put containers in sealable bags. Pills should be placed in sealable bags. The bags are to be put into a depository in the police or sheriff’s department which operates like a bank depository.
It is that simple.
Why is this important?
There are two main reasons: First, prescription drugs have contributed to abuse and addiction in larger numbers each year.
Unused and stockpiled painkillers have been cited as a major factor in leading people to addiction to opioids, which can lead to heroin addiction.
The second benefit is proper disposal for the protection of our groundwater. Even today the most common practice of disposing of medicine is simply throwing it away or flushing it down the toilet. Either way this will end up in the water supply. Water treatment facilities can only remove solids and nearly all medicines are water soluble.
