At a special session July 21, New Richmond City Council members unanimously approved a recommendation from the Library Planning Committee to hire MSR Design (Meyer, Scherer & Rockcastle, Ltd.) out of Minneapolis to design the initial concepts for the new library for a fee of $44,000 plus reimbursable expenses of $2,500.
The Library Planning Committee received proposals from eight design firms in response to its Request For Proposals. Four firms were selected to be interviewed including MSR.
According to the committee's recommendation, candidates were rated on cost, library experience, understanding of the project, related experience, addressed sustainability issues, fundraising assistance, community engagement and overall impression/intangible quality.
"They (MSR) understands that we hold our history very dear, but they also know that we want to move into the future being innovative and progressive as well. What rang true for members of the committee, is that we can have it all with this group. The biggest issue is, that we need to make sure we have a core team in place, meaning not just our engagement person, not just the designer, but a core team that will work well with Kim, the Library Board, and the city staff," said Alderperson Scottie Ard.
According to MSR's proposal, work to achieve conceptual designs would begin in late July and conclude in mid September. The public is expected to have several opportunities to provide feedback during the course of the design process.
