Want to run for office? Here’s your chance

April seems a long way off right now, but it’s already time to start thinking about the various local elections that will happen then. The filing period for many of those races opened Dec. 1.

Election Day is April 7 this spring, with a primary on Feb. 17, if needed. To get on the ballot for those elections, individuals must file with the proper authority. Filing deadlines are at 5 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 6, for most municipalities. Others use a caucus process to nominate candidates.

For some races, candidates must gather a minimum number of signatures after filing a declaration of candidacy. The deadline for incumbent candidates to file a notification of non-candidacy is Friday, Dec. 26.

Area voters may have a variety of races on their April 7 ballots, including school board candidates, county supervisor candidates and likely multiple local municipality races.

For more information about running for office, visit the Wisconsin Government Accountability Board website at gab.wi.gov.
