New Richmond U11 girls soccer wins River Cup in Hudson
The New Richmond U11 girls soccer team headed to Hudson to participate in the annual River Cup this past weekend, winning the tournament championship.
The team was made up of 14 girls, including seven from the U11 C2 team and seven from the U11 C3 team. The age group participated in pool play where all players from the age group train together and play tournaments together while splitting apart for their league games.
This group of girls has excelled this summer. In the tournament opener they took on River Falls, winning 2-1. They battled host team Hudson in their second game, pulling out a 3-2 victory. That led into their final game, with a chance to bring home the trophy. New Richmond got off to a slow start, falling behind 2-0. The Tigers turned things up and made a big comeback to win the game and the championship with a 4-2 victory over Gitchi Gummi, which is a team from the Duluth area.
The tournament served as a great tune up for the team which has qualified for the summer state tournament to be played July 25-29.
There are a total of 22 girls who play at this level. They practice together during the week and for tournaments they take 14 girls, with different combinations of girls for each tournament. Earlier this summer they took first place at the Running with the Wolves Tournament in Cottage Grove, Minn. They also took first place at the St. Croix Cup in Lakeland, Minn.
During the week the two teams are split into a C2 and C3 league team. The C2 team won its league title with eight wins and two losses. Both losses were by one goal. The C2 team has qualified for the state tournament and is allowed to call up three players from the C3 team.
Because the team won its league championship it will be promoted to C1 league play. The New Richmond Soccer Club has not fielded a team at the C1 level at any age level in the history of the NRSC.
