Four St. Croix Central football players have received all-state honors, two for their work on the football field and two for their efforts in the classroom.

Two-way standout lineman Chris Matteson was named as an honorable mention all-state choice on the 2017 Wisconsin Football Coaches Association All-State team. Matteson earned his recognition as a defensive lineman. Matteson was one of the best linemen in the area, especially at stopping opponents' running plays. That showed again in the state championship game, where he made six tackles.

Matteson was one of two Middle Border Conference players to receive all-state honors. Osceola senior Erik Braml was selected as an honorable mention offensive lineman.

Despite putting a team in a state championship for the fourth straight year, the MBC did not have a single player named to the all-state first team.

St. Croix Central junior running back Ryan Larson was selected to the WSN All-State Finals Team. For the second straight year, Larson was a powerhouse in the state championship game. In this year's Division 4 state title game against Lodi, Larson rushed for 149 yards and two touchdowns on 33 carries. Last year, in Central's 49-28 win over River Valley in the Division 4 state championship game, Larson rushed for 158 yards on 41 carries.

Central seniors Alec Fischer and Collin Nelson were named to the WFCA All-State Academic Team. To be eligible, players must be a senior who carries a grade point average of 3.75 or higher.

The WFCA All-Region team was also announced. Nine players from the Middle Border Conference were granted all-region honors.

Matteson and Braml led that group. St. Croix Central also placed senior lineman Hunter Schmidt on the team as an offensive lineman.

New Richmond had one player receive all-region honors. Senior Blake Kretovics was selected for his work at inside linebacker for the Tigers this season.

Other MBC teams who received all-region honors on defense included Prescott's Weston Bartsch at defensive end, Osceola's Logan Clark at outside linebacker and Baldwin-Woodville's Jaden Northup at defensive back. Others honored on offense were Osceola's Haakon Carlson at wide receiver and Baldwin-Woodville's Collin Curtis at running back.

Baldwin-Woodville assistant coach John Curtis was selected as one of the all-region assistant coaches.
