Winter sports seasons kick in this week

The Somerset boys basketball team will be in action on Tuesday, playing at St. Croix Falls. The Spartans (in white) are shown in action during last week's game against Mondovi.

With the Thanksgiving break completed, winter high school sports in the area hit full speed this week.

This Tuesday, there are four teams in action. The New Richmond boys basketball team opens its season with a game at Rice Lake. The Somerset boys hockey team will play at home against Chisago Lakes. Both Somerset basketball teams have already played a game, but they will resume on Tuesday. The Spartan girls will play at Unity Tuesday while the boys play at St. Croix Falls.

Two of the area wrestling teams begin their season on Thursday. New Richmond will host Baldwin-Woodville and Somerset will wrestle at Osceola. St. Croix Central's match with Ellsworth scheduled for Thursday was postponed because of Central's late run in the football playoffs.

Also on Thursday, the Somerset hockey team will play at Eau Claire Regis. The Somerset and St. Croix Central girls basketball teams will both host games, Somerset against Barron and Central against St. Croix Falls.

Two games will be played in New Richmond on Friday, with the Tiger boys hockey and girls basketball teams both making their season debuts. The Tiger girls basketball team will host St. Croix Central and the Tiger skaters will host Barron.
