College sports: Altena has impressive start for Falcons

Sam Altena made an impressive debut for the UW-River Falls football team on Saturday.

Altena, a 2017 New Richmond High School graduate, rushed for 152 yards and three touchdowns in leading the Falcons to a 41-0 victory over Minnesota-Morris on Saturday. Altena transferred to UW-River Falls over the summer after spending his first year of college at Northern State University in South Dakota.

Altena is one of several local players on the Falcons. Bailey Germain of New Richmond had two tackles, including a quarterback sack, in the win over Morris. Somerset native Max Praschak is slated to be a starting linebacker for the Falcons, but he missed the game after spraining an ankle in the team’s scrimmage the previous.

Freshman Peter Lepper is a tight end on the Falcon roster.

Other college notes:

-- Ben Peterson of New Richmond was the starting left guard for the UW-Eau Claire football team on Saturday. The Blugolds opened the season with a 45-13 win over Loras College. Two St. Croix Central graduates are on the Blugold roster. Trevor Nelson is hoping to return soon from a major injury suffered late in the 2017 season. Freshman Hunter Schmidt is an offensive lineman for the Blugolds.

-- Junior Cam Hausman is the kicker and punter for the University of Minnesota-Duluth football team. Hausman, of New Richmond, was busy in the Bulldogs’ season opener on Thursday. UMD defeated Minot State 49-3. Hausman kicked off eight times, averaging 56 yards per kick. His only punt of the game covered 41 yards. St. Croix Central graduate Cole Refsnider is a linebacker for the Bulldogs. He finished with one tackle in Thursday’s game.

-- St. Croix Central graduate Shiloh Goodwin was a defensive leader for the St. Olaf University football team in its season opening win. St. Olaf opened the season Saturday with a 49-14 win over Crown College. Goodwin ranked third on the team with five tackles.

-- Three Somerset graduates are members of the UW-Stout football team. The Blue Devils lost their season opener on Saturday to St. John’s University, 27-0. Heaven Hunt, a junior wide receiver, was Stout’s punt returner, carrying two punts for nine yards. Logan Peterson and Ryan listed as linebackers on the Stout roster.

-- Trent Smith of St. Croix Central is a junior running back on the UW-La Crosse football team.

-- Bailey Wilson of New Richmond is a junior on the UW-Eau Claire men’s cross country team.

-- Hannah Baker of New Richmond is a senior on the UW-Stout women’s golf team.
