Fall sports practice dates are set

High school sports in the area begin practice for the fall season beginning next week.

Several of the high school sports, including football, girls tennis and girls golf, will be meeting for the first times for their 2008 seasons next Monday. The schools require that all paperwork, including emergency cards, physical cards, etc., be completed before an athlete will be allowed to practice.

Here is the basic information on when each of the local high school sports will be starting its season.

New Richmond

New Richmond cross country will meet for its first practice at 7 a.m. on Monday, Aug. 18 at the High School. The next morning the team will leave for its annual Spooner training trip.

The New Richmond High School and Middle School cross country teams will be holding meetings on Monday, Aug. 11. The High School meeting will be in the NRHS cafeteria. The high school students will meet at 5 p.m., with the parent meeting at 6:30 p.m. For the middle school team, seventh and eighth grade students interested in running with the team will meet at 5 p.m., at the south playground at New Richmond Middle School on Aug. 11. A parent meeting for the cross country team will be held during the Middle School open house.

New Richmond football will start its first season under new varsity coach Jason Eckert next Monday. Equipment will be handed out next Monday, with a list of times for the players posted in the football locker room. Freshmen and anyone not named on that list can receive equipment at 11 a.m.

The Tigers begin practice next Tuesday and will hold practices from 7:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. each day of the week. On Saturday, Aug. 16, the Tigers will hold Community Day, where the public is invited to come see the team practice. The Community Day event will run from 9-11 a.m.

New Richmond girls golf will begin next Monday. The first Tiger practice will start at 7:30 a.m. at The Links course. Any girls in grades 9-12 interested in golf are invited to join the team. Athletic cards and physical cards should be completed before the first practice.

New Richmond boys soccer will be hold its first practice on Monday, Aug. 18. More information will be released as practice times are finalized.

New Richmond girls tennis will start its season with an organizational meeting next Monday from 2-5 p.m. at the High School cafeteria. The first practice is from 3:30-6 p.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 12,, at the tennis courts.

New Richmond volleyball will start its season on Monday, Aug. 18. The team will have four days of trials, with practices from 9-11:30 a.m. and 1-3 p.m. On Friday, Aug. 22 the team will practice from 9 a.m.-noon. The following day the Tigers will compete in the annual Amery scrimmage.

The Tiger volleyball team is also planning a parent meeting, which will be held at 6 p.m. on Aug. 14 at the High School commons.


Somerset cross country will start its season on Monday, Aug. 18. The first practice will be held at Somerset High School at 8 a.m. on the 18th. All paperwork should be turned in before the first practice. Anyone with questions can contact coach Diane Belter at 247-5845.

Somerset football begins its season next Monday. All players in grades 9-12 will report for a team meeting at 8 a.m. on Monday. Equipment checkout will follow at 9:30 a.m., with a running test and physical test to follow.

The first practices will be next Tuesday, with all players in grades 9-12 practicing from 8-11:15 a.m. and 6-8:15 p.m. The team's annual cookout and intrasquad practice is scheduled for Monday, Aug. 18.

Somerset girls golf will hold its first practice next Monday. The practices will be held from 7:30-9:30 a.m. at Bristol Ridge Golf Course. Any girls in grades 9-12 interested in competing with the golf team should attend next Monday's practice.

Somerset volleyball will begin practicing on Monday, Aug. 18. Coach Sara Eichten returns to the Spartans after a one-year leave of absence. The Spartans will practice for the first four days from 8-10:30 a.m. and noon-2 p.m. All athletes will need indoor and outdoor pairs of shoes for the practices.

St. Croix Central

St. Croix Central cross country will start its practice at 9 a.m. on Monday, Aug. 18 at the High School. Two-a-day practices will start the following day.

St. Croix Central football will meet for the first time next Monday. The team will be issued equipment at 8 a.m. on Monday, followed by a team meeting at 9 a.m. The following day the team will start practices, which will run from 8-11 a.m. and 4-6 p.m. The Panthers are also planning an intrasquad scrimmage on Saturday, Aug. 16, at 8:30 a.m. The scrimmage is open to the public.

St. Croix Central girls golf will hold its first practice under new coach Dave Larson next Monday. The practice will be held at the Hammond Golf Club, beginning at 8 a.m.

St. Croix Central volleyball starts its season on Monday, Aug. 18. The first practice will be in the SCC High School gym at 8 a.m.
